They weren't - at all. German tanks were Superior between 40 - 42. in 1936 - 39 their tanks were worse because of the Versailles limitations and post 42 they started falling behind because Germany started losing the war. A lot of their prototype tanks were on par with Russian tanks tho

besides, german tanks in 1940-1942 were inferior too
