The system they established was unique for its time, a republic with absolutely no hereditary aristocracy or monarchy, across an entire nation.

This being said, it owed much to the earlier legal systems of Britain, the Netherlands, and Rome.

It didn't exactly grow out of nothing, but the American political system was an audacious gamble by any measure.

So their ideas could in a general sense be found before they began espousing them but the constitution they wrote wasn't particularly common for the time.
