Non-American here.

I want to learn more about American history, specially about the 18th and 19th centuries.

What are some recommended books? It doesn't matter if the books are ideological, it would also be nice to see how the left or the right construct their narratives about the country.

"John Adams" by David McCullough focuses on a guy in the driver's seat for the events leading to the Revolution and formation of the government.

"A People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn is pretty broad in scope, but covers those centuries. It is a very angry, Marxist interpretation of events.

"The Civil War" by Shelby Foote is a 3-volume set and somewhat sympathetic take on the events, while acknowledging the South never stood a chance.
"Battle Cry of Freedom" by James McPherson if you don't want to read 3 books.

"Killing Lincoln" by Bill O'Reilly will be ridiculous and right-wing if that's the main criteria you're looking for.
