I'll admit that the series kicked off my interest in history. I've been obsessed with the Crusades ever since I played the first one. Brotherhood and Black Flag are probably my faves though. Haven't played Unity, Rogue, or Syndicate though.

Black Flag was surprisingly accurate. Since the assassin crap is taking so little place in the story, they focused on fleshing out the pirate republic of Nassau. They explained why the "pirates" were so popular amongst the settlers (reselling cheaper the stuff from the continent) and I really like how they explained the character of Black Beard in a very logical point of view: his character was made for only one thing, convince the English the pirates can NOT be tamed and they shouldn't waste their time and money trying to (sadly they did).

game focuses on two different factions: assasins and templars, assassins are underdogs who always try to thwart templar schemes. templars are a group with a very strict ideology and endgame, which they try to achieve any means neccessary.

while templars try to achieve their goals, they fuck over people who are less powerful than them which causes oppressed to find guidance and assistance from another organization which is assassins.

game is about underdogs vs the big brother and templars being bunch of shady cunts in my opinion are the perfect antagonists for an alternate history game to have.

I played the pirate one, since that era interested me. I enjoyed learning about Nassau and other towns and landmarks. There's a staircase in Nassau that's a deliberate anachorism and the in-game text discusses it more.

I play Anus Creed games because of the setting and the game world. But the characters and the plot are absolute trash.

Anyway, one thing AC2 did EXTREMELY well is creating atmosphere. Visiting Venoce in it's prime, streets full of people, Gondolas on the rivers, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2egNrsS5Ew&index=8&list=RDdBYK2IvSNSM playing, was just fucking amazing.
Generally that's where I think the games strength lies. The story is a bit retarded but it's okay when it doesn't go too far into the ancient aliens stuff.
Stopped playing after 3, which was okayish, just with a very lame setting (New York and Boston were just boring). Brotherhood was arguably the Prime, Rome was pretty good (though Venice stays my favorite), Revelations was okay, Ottoman Konstantinyye was a bit bland at times but overall pretty okay.
