> The practice of cannibalism (喫人) has a peculiarly rich history in China. According to Key Ray Chong, whilst the Chinese are not especially different from other cultures when it comes to the practice of "survival cannibalism", they are utterly unique in their use of so-called "learned cannibalism". Learned cannibalism, as termed by Key Ray Chong, is quite the opposite of its survival-orientated counterpart, and is widely considered to be "an expression of love and hatred, and a peculiar extension of Confucian doctrine."

>Cannibalism for culinary appreciation
In ancient times, cannibalism was often practiced in China as a type of culinary appreciation. Exotic dishes were prepared for jaded upper-class palates in times of both health and sickness. According to the historian Jitsuzo Kuwabara, the following were the most common cooking methods for human flesh:

>Fu (脯 fu3): slicing and drying meat
>Geng (dish) (羹 geng1): boiling in soup
>Hai (醢 hai3): mincing and hashing meat
>Luan (臠 luan2): slicing meat
>Hai was also a punishment in ancient China.

>As late as the 19th century, it was still not unusual for Chinese executioners to eat the heart and brains of the criminals they dispatched. As well as eating some of the flesh for health reasons, they sold what was left for a profit.

>In 2006, the Public Security Bureau and local media of Lanzhou confirmed the discovery of two human arms "mixed with ginger and chili" in a Lanzhou landfill.

What the fuck is wrong with the Chinese?

>Cannibalism for ideological purposes

>There have been some reports of cannibalism for ideological reasons during the Cultural Revolution and Great Leap Forward. The most well documented example is in the village of Wuxuan, Guangxi Autonomous Region where in the local officials began to practise cannibalism between May and July of 1968 during the Cultural Revolution, resulting in the imprisonment of 15 local officials. Although the Party and the relatives of the victims are aware of this, it has yet to be made public in China. In 1986 and 1988, Zheng Y (Cheng I), a former Red Guard and the author of Scarlet Memorial, went down to Guangxi where he obtained documents detailing the cannibalism. "For the first time in our long history Chinese ate people, not because there was a famine and they were starving to death, but for political reasons. I think thousands participated in the cannibalism and at least many hundreds were eaten. The Party knows all about it," said Zheng. According to Cheng, hundreds of men, women, and children deemed enemies of the Revolution were killed and eaten by the perpetrators, who even gave comments on the best way of preparing the meat - apparently by broiling not boiling.

There's this utterly baffling segment (for a Westerner anyway) in Water Margin where one of the heroes is almost killed and eaten by two cannibalistic bandits who serve human flesh to passing travelers out of their inn. When they discover who he is they sat sorry for trying to kill and eat him and then join up with him. Nowhere is their murder and consumption of innocent people portrayed as a bad thing.

>In 2003, the Guangdong Provincial Public Security Bureau sought to block reports that some restaurants in the southern province had cooked dead babies in soups and sold the food to businessmen from Taiwan and Hong Kong.
>In the nineties, also in Guangdong, it was discovered that foetuses were being trafficked and boiled to make soups marketed as beauty treatments

WHAT THE FUCK
>>

china was poor then, and there are many corrupt businessmen in asia that will go to any lengths to cure their illnesses, including these shady methods

to put it in a western perspective, imagine if some of the rich people in your countries genuinely believed in stuff from the Celtic era involving human sacrifices and what not

it's not too far off to those incidents where people get drugged and wake up missing a kidney

China isn't even superstitious, they're just damn ridiculous. Somehow boiling or drying and powdering something makes it 'healthy'. Thousands of years of snake oil, except that snake oil is tiger penis powder and baby girl wax.

Not going to read the link, but "expression of love" part is probably based on the story of the official who helped his starving monarch by cutting off a slice of his own leg and serving it to the king.

His name was JieZiTui, he gets mentioned every so often in confucianism. Apparently this story is related to the modern QingMing festival.
>>
>>3362476
So it's kind of like the story of Roman Charity, except with cannibalism

Didn't Liu Bei eat someone's wife?

"When Liu An received Liu Bei, he offered Bei a meal and Bei gladly accepted. Finding that he had no meat, however, Liu An killed his wife and used meat from her body to prepare Liu Bei a meal. When Bei left later, he found the body with a section carved out and was deeply moved by Liu An’s actions, realizing what had been done.

When he rejoined Cao Cao, he told him of what happened, and Cao Cao too was moved by the story of Liu An’s actions. Cao Cao sent money to compensate Liu An for his wife."

Chinese history is utterly fascinating, and scholars at the time kept some pretty good records back then.

That's how traditional medicine works in all cultures anon, even today most drugs don't even come to market. In fact most drugs are inspired by chemicals found in nature that are impossible to reproduce by laboratory means. Penicillin was a happy accident due to a dirty scientist after as well. Think of traditional medicine as a step in the right direction. It's up to modern science to investigate whether traditional medical claims hold any water, but the vast majority of new revolutionary medical drugs are inspired by traditional medicine.
