Much like mexican american immgrants now, even with the tight-nit communities they have, many third generation Mexican Americans can't speak spanish, and are more likely to recognize the US as their ONLY home.

These weren't aliens coming over making little German enclaves beholden only to the German gov't, they assimlated as much as possible, keeping some traditions but become wholly American.

It should also be noted many of those communities were here before the end of the 19th century, with some groups having soldiers participate in the Civil war.

German newspapers, restaurants, sports clubs, churches, and political organizations were all very common up until the early 1900's. That influence is still perceivable today, especially in the Midwest.

The fact remains that until the 1850s (when the US had a population of about 20 million) the large majority of US settlers were from England. These people were still breeding with an above replacement level birthrate.

Even afterwards there was still large a English migration, eight million Germans compared to five million Britions immigrating to the US between 1820 and 1980.

As recently as 1980 there were more people with self-reported English ancestry than German ancestry - 25 million of them seemed to have dropped off the census in the last 30 years.

Oh and there are more living British immigrants than German immigrants in the US.

Plus there are 20 million or so "ethnic America" most of whom I'd assume to have British or Irish ancestry.

My grandfather's parents were germans who immigrated at the start of the century. He spoke fluent German, and his entire family lived in Germany, aside from his parents, and his aunt who his mother murdered (long story).

When the draft came about he didn't want to be sent over to fight in Germany, on account of his entire family being there, so he went and enlisted in the army air corps, on the promise that he would be sent to the pacific.

After being enlisted he was immediately forced to go to Germany anyways, against his will.

A lot of them didn't have a choice.

My area has a great Swedish restaurant. A lot of towns in America have large groups of immigrants mostly from just one or two countries and they tend to keep the flare of their country of origin.
