>Operation Mockingbird
>The mafia
>The Dreyfus Affair
>The Tuskegee Syphilis Study
>15 year old Nayirah's testimony about babies being torn from incubators in Iraq, which turned out to be a girl trained by the CIA

Are there any equivalents in other nations or eras? Did the Romans or Assyrians or ancient Chinese ever have any great conspiracies that we know of? What was the view at the time?

Both of the triumvirates from Roman history were secret conspiracies.

how the fuck did you find /his/ and don't even know about the First and Second Triumvirates? The first was a conspiracy between Caesar, Crassus, and Pompei to consolidate power in the Roman Republic, the Second was Octavius, Lepidus, and Antony to continue on that. They were crucial to formation of Imperial Rome. What piss poor excuse of a school did you graduate from?

Why did they last as long as they did? Why couldn't anyone stop three men?
Communism is the greatest conspiracy theory of all. It hatched a million small conspiracies around the world to overthrow and subvert literally everything. Print media, radio, academia, powerful families, governments both local and nation-wide. The Long March Through the Institutions is probably the greatest conspiratorial feat of all time, because most conspirators didn't need to know anything except for what was in front of their noses.

Ceasar was a brilliant strategist, conquered a people who had caused Rome a humiliating defeat early in their history, and had the loyalty of his legions
Pompei was also a great general, and had the backing of most of the Roman nobility
Crassus was the wealthiest man in all of Rome, but got himself killed in a war against Parthia.
What stopped the first triumvirate was a civil war between Caesar and Pompei, and Caesar's eventual assassination.
The second triumvirate wasn't stopped and Octavius became Augustus after his civil war with the other two.
