If you happened to be an unspooked übermensch in those days you might take advantage of some business opportunities in the colonies, after the cuckolds have cleared the way for you, though colonies only constituted a small proportion of the economy's surplus. The majority of economic activity occurred in the homeland. Leftists will tell you Europe became so powerful because they oppressed everyone as part of their sob story narrative, it wasn't, it was because of the technological revolution going on in Europe at the time which as a side-effect put them ahead of the curve in naval warfare and exploration. You'd be better off being a boring square just like today.

Each other. Seriously, they went through two world wars where the only loosers were each other. America became such a supreme global power because at the start of the 20th century it had the same chances the europeans did but did not have to suffer through two world wars.

America Became a global power, not out of any inherent value, but because of a toatl lack of warfare, how many serious conflicts have there been in the USA's soil, with equal combatents in a post automatic weapons world?

The American Civil war, which devastated populations, economies, and created cultural rifts that still exist today, Europe has fought amongst itself since the Romans, lines have been drawn, redrawn, treaties have been signed, broken, denounced, supported, countless states have come into existence, destroyed, and recreated for political ends.

The USA "won" because the USA has near perfect natural barriers, Two oceans and miltarily incompetant neighbours under an American yoke, nothing on the continent they're adjacent to or the one they control the majority of could even come close to seriously damaging America (Barring the possibility of the trident system being available to Canada due to Britain's close ties and mutual NATO membership, even then though Britain as a whole only holds less than a tenth of the nuclear weapons the USA has).

The USA also had the benefits of large swaths of territory, a relatively homogenous population (post civil war) and a solid, stable political system (Although some parts of the modern governenance of the USA are clearly additions not detailed within the consitution IE common law).

America is Europe without the interesting history, the only problem is the interesting history leads to Blood, toil, sweat and tears.
