Actually not that bad, oppressive sure but he stabilise a dysfunctional republic and grew the economy. He was also very intelligent and a fantastic speech giver.

It was a difficult time - Interwar period, rise of fascist and natsoc ideologies, Spanish Civl War and Spanish republicans that were iberian union federalists and supported and let portuguese political republicans oposition to military dictatorship, WWII and neutrality and invasion plans from both sides, then Cold War and rise of communists ideologies associates with Third World decolonization/liberation and UK-USA Atlantic Charter.
Our country only had real peace until Dissolution of Soviet Union to 2001
