Ok man, Marx's biggest flaw was not outlining an axiological framework through which the means of production could follow and appropriately allocate resources toward. Capitalism already does this and it isn't particularly good, but it is functional. A million Marxists (including Lenin, Stalin, Mao, and so on) have proposed (and in the names referenced previously, implemented) solutions to this problem which I won't go into, but, in my opinion, this is probably Communism's fatal flaw. Without this fact, most socio-economic systems crumble, not just Communism.

The distinction is basically exploiting peoples labour. You can't exploit your own labour, and it's hard to exploit your families unless it's real dysfunctional. I have no idea how a commie society would enforce the distinction on family enterprises.

But historically communist governments have shut down these enterprises because they mess with price controls, government power of the economy, and veer pretty close to capitalism once they're successful and employ a large, extended family. In Cuba for example to my knowledge (from family thats been down there) most people run side family businesses to make money, and the government mostly ignores them unless you get really successful, and are even more lax in recent years with the tourist-supplying economy.
