Mostly not major though. Soviets were losing over 100,000 men in most battles they lost. Germany only started losing close to that many when the campaign into USSR went belly up.

Who else despite Italy and Japan do you think were arming at this time? Britain was still too poor to do anything which is why they hadn't started a war with Hitler sooner. The reason France built the wall of defence against Germany is because they couldn't build an army big enough to go on the offensive and prepared for a defensive war. When Germans invaded Russia was stunned, it was a surprise attack. In addition, Russian infraestructure was intact, allowing the Germans to advance easily.

By the time the Germans retreated Russian infraestructure was destroyed by the fighting, making logistics a nightmare.
