Russia was in the process off modernization before ww1 and even had a protodemocratic parliament, the Duma. Communism collapsed because it is an inherently flawed ideology that wrongly demonizes essential economic freedoms.

This is actually not true. Or rather, it depends on the period. I think only during and after WW2 most gulag prisoners were political prisoners.

alright im going to do someting crazy and try to be the voice of reason here

on the one hand Stalin was a paranoid megalomaniac who murdered anyone who could possibly pose a threat to his rule, including literally 100% of the original bolsheviks and revolutionaries. the secret police he set up was far more concerned with spreading general terror and making people obedient than actually catching criminals and traitors and thousands of innocents were sent to camps for essentially no reason. furthermore when the ukranian communist part was showing signs of dissatisfaction with stalins rule, and teh ukranian peasants showing increasing nationalism, Stalin decided to kill two birds with one stone and orchestrate a famine in ukraine to prevent a rebellion and at the same time use confiscated food to fuel urbanization and industralization.

on the other hand when stalin came to power russia had wooden plows, when he died it had nuclear reactors. the brutality of stalins reign also allowed him to accomplish industrialization more rapid than anywhere else ever, industrialization has always been a brutal and inhumane process, look at Victorian Briton or south Korea from 1960-80. not only this but stalin fought off the larges and most vicious invasion of any country inhuman history, though granted he would have had an easier time doing it if he had bothered to listen to his intelligence and actually prepared for the invasion. furthermore the soviet union emerged from this most brutal conflict in all of human history as one of two world superpowers and would see its influence extend to all continents of the world and leave a huge mark on human history.

in conclusion, was stalin an evil dictator who murdered and destroyed at will, yes, but is there and other leader who can claim to have accomplished so much during their rule? probably not.

oh and don't let anyone telly you that czarist or kerenskyite Russia could have accomplished anything similar. the elimination of the decadent nobility and cynical, self centered property owning classes allowed the subordination of the whole economy to central plans that facilitated rapid industrialization without having to worry about economic collapses endemic to capitalist economies. fundamentally given Russia's post civil war situation the planned economy was obviously the best system in the circumstances.

this is actually not true after the development of modern agriculture. Pretty much every famine in the last 70 years (and before that in certain places, like Ireland) was either directly caused or massively exasperated by the government either taking food from farmers and selling it/reserving it for the elites or preventing outside aid from entering the affected areas

there has never been a famine in a country with a free democracy, because free democratic governments actively take steps to ensure the welfare of all
