Well, no one wanted to trade with them. The Americans, who had been their primary trade partners before the slave revolt, got the hell out once it started, and didn't want to legitimize a country born out of a slave revolt after Haiti was proclaimed. Louverture's original vision for Saint-Domingue as it's governor for life was to diversify agriculture but keep making bank out of sugar, have some forced labor until things stabilized and infrastructure was repaired, have the whites come back and either give them back their land or indemnise them. Basically, he wanted the old order back, but now skewed towards the mixed population, autonomy from France (not independence), and of course no slavery. Something like this probably could have been great for the colony, but he pissed off all the wrong people, and after his downfall his lieutenant took over, and that guy was batshit insane. Genocided the Whites left, making sure no Western country would ever trust Haiti again, proclaimed himself emperor, and let the former slaves just kinda do whatever they wanted with the land.

Haiti's story is pretty tragic but fascinating. Shame it's so heavily politicized, it's almost impossible to find info that's not too biased.
