I dunno why William is portrayed as some military genius when it was just charge after charge after charge and a dumb melee that took until nightfall to end.

Depends on how you classify "His army". He took a large contingent of household guards up to Stamford bridge, which was reinforced by local forces of the nobility up there, and a fyrd of freemen. They win that battle, and Harold goes south with his housecarls, and raises a new fyrd of the people down near Hastings.

So in a sense, yes, he "left" a bunch of troops up north. On the other hand, he wouldn't have the authority to command them to march south and help out at Hastings, and the inability to actually pool resources of the whole "nation" to meet a threat is probably more important than the combined arms advantage that everyone talks about in bringing William victory.
