I mean, if you were picking up ants for analysis, where would you pick them up from? The center of the colony, or from some wandering diaspora? If you wanted to analyze ant behavior, you probably wouldn't want the ones that didn't appear to be functioning properly as part of the central colony, save maybe to figure out why these were the exceptions.
