I was 17 or 18 and the teacher asked a girl in my class something about Hitler and she implied that he was the current president of Finland. (finnish btw) One of the autists at the front of the class got so mad that he packed his bag and left to go home. Probably because firearms became more powerful in the 18th. Mobility and cost were also factors.
Sappers in the Napoleonic wars also wore armor to protect against British shrapnel shells.
Metal armor was used again in WWI and WWII and it could stop pistol rounds.
