The majority of human history is filled with bad stuff like brutality, suffering, war, pain, and genocide. However, in the developed world for the past 80 years, things have been mostly OK compared to previous times. Is it possible that the developed world will return to the historical norm? Because that would suck ass.

The world as a whole is becoming less brutal every generation. Sure if the current structure was to fail the power vacuum would cause some conflicts but I personally don't see us devolving into a world wide panic of third world war lords genociding one another.
Yes, if anything it is inevitable and as we depend more and more on technology we are setting ourselves up for one of the biggest collapses in history which will make China's apocalypses look like a cake walk.

Between the Japanese Invasion of China, German atrocities in Poland and Russia, Russia in general, Allied terror bombing of German and Japanese cities, and just war dead in general, WW1 wasn't even close.
