Compared to the other European colonial empires, why did Portugal try so hard to hold on to its African possessions? And what are some good resources on the Angolan/Mozambican wars (both colonial and post-colonial)?

I think it would make more sense to ask why did Brits and Frenchies did NOT try so hard to hold on to their African possessions.
If I was a king of a country I'd do whatever to keep control of those resource rich nations.

Brit and french colonies could be indirectly controlled by puppet goverments of brit and french companies. Poortugal couldn't afford that and had to stick to direct methods.
Because compared to the other European colonial empires, they weren't bankrupted by two world wars.

"The Fate of Africa" by Martin Meredith is a good book that covers all the important events during and after the decolonization of Africa.

France held on to her colonies pretty hard.
Britain was the one that let go, relatively speaking.

If needed them to justify itself. That is Portugal IS it's colonies vs British colonies where it's colonies are extension of itself.
