Im from Argentina, I have read the diaries of the loli lover Juán Peron had, she was a low class starved girl yet she wrote better than the majority of current argentinian population.
Its not an anecdotical evidence, its a trend, people had a high regard of culture and morals.

I think that the moral high point of humanity was Classical Greece, while the early 20th century was its cultural high point, but close enough.
