Implying humans / apes / chimps didn't exist what animal species had the best chance at developing civilization?
>>328344
A different kind of apes.
Or, corvids?
This seems like a question for a different board though.
>>328344
This is not History. Fuck off.
>>328349
>evolved corvids
>that feel when no harpy civilization

thread should on /an/
But, I guess it would be birds or large cats.
>>328355
Prehistory is cool though.
>>328344
Historically speaking, if the Cretaceous-paleogene extinction had not happened, theropods would have the best chance at intelligent life, but what was left of those species became birds so.
>>328344
birds, which would be infinitly cooler for us to have been when we worked out we would have been decended from dinosaurs

this, i think raptors were kinda close to civility, they had nest and close to primitive tribes from what i'm aware of. Also i think elephants are close as well even by these standards, those mother fuckers can paint pretty well.
>>328376
This isn't even prehistory.
>>328414
Some kind of large-brained theropod, like someome already said. The problem is reptilian brains aren't very sharp and intelligence is a very frail thing, specially in its early stages. There's a pretty cool story called The Hunters of Pangea about a band of ornitholestes that develop a language and even primitive tools but they die out after their intelligence enables them to hunt their food supply (sauropods) to extinction. Well they don't go extinct, they just get dumb again over time with their rudimentary but-still-not-enough intelligence being without any real advantage.

fuckin octopi or dolpins or whales.
imagine the kinds of vehicles octopus would drive. with so many controls because they have like 8 arms and theyre squiggly too.
>>328463
>go to europa
>theres a bunch of hyper-intelligent octopi there
>"we've been waiting for you"
>diplomatic relations fail because everybody is scared as fuck about the cthulu people
>nuke europa
>earth gets world peace because they exhausted their entire supply of nuclear arms
>>328454
No. This is speculative sci-fi bullshit. It's not even the study of pre-history.
>>328557
Thats even worse, it isn't even remotely connected to /his/ then
Complex tool-making would seem a prerequisite, which means hands. Much better still if they're unencumbered by walking (i.e. the creature be bipedal).
Nothing seems to fit the bill well besides primates. Maybe racoons?
