>Who are they
Modern day Assyrians just like their ancestors are a Semitic people originating from the Near East. Unlike most others in that region, they are Christians. In Antiquity, they had a rather long-lasting empire that eventually was defeated by the combined might of the Neo-Babylonians, Persians, Lydians, and Medes. Their downfall was due to their own excessive cruelty that lead to their subjects and vassals revolting against them. After that they would never be an independent or major power in the Near East again.
>where did they originate from
Assur is where their capital and first city originates in north central Iraq, situated on the banks of the Tigris River, north of the Little Zab River tributary. This city was founded about 4500-4600 years ago.
>what is their heritage/ethnicity
As I said earlier. They are a Semitic people speaking a Semitic language related to Arabic, Hebrew, etc...They originate from northern Iraq and eastern Syria, are Christians, and generally were favored subjects to the Greeks, Persians, Romans, and so on until the Arabs and rise of Islam.

I thought Assur was the original capital but got moved to Nineveh. More on this?
>>
>>3281374
Nineveh was founded and settled before the Assyrians took it over and made it one of their major cities/provincial capitals.

>Nineveh was one of the oldest and greatest cities in antiquity. The area was settled as early as 6000 BC and, by 3000 BC, had become an important religious center for the Mesopotamian goddess Ishtar.
>The early city (and subsequent buildings) was constructed on a fault line and, consequently, suffered damage from a number of earthquakes. One such event destroyed the first temple of Ishtar, which was rebuilt in 2260 BC by the Akkadian king Manishtushu.
>Texts from the Hellenistic period later offered an eponymous Ninus as the founder of Nineveh, although there is no historical basis for this.

In fact what I can tell, both Assur and Nineveh predate the Akkadian-Assyrian occupation of both cities.

I saw a lot of the stuff they have in the British museum from Nimrud and elsewhere. Truly beautiful stuff, the wall carvings are amazing. It really hurts to see the Lamassu which survived intact in the same place for thousands of years destroyed.

Makes me actually thankful that colonialists took a lot of the stuff and it can be preserved for future generations.
