Destroyers were originally called Torpedo Boat Destroyers for a reason.

They did, the US used to bomb the shit out of their launch sites, they had a whole ridiculous plan to mass suicide run them at Okinawa but they got BTFO from aircraft. Also they didn't do much for the Americans outside of Guadalcanal

Because torpedo boats when out of air cover are death traps. They did not have rader and their AA guns would only really help if they are grouped up. Planes would see them before they would see the planes.
