Why did Hitler make Himmler leader of Army Group Vistula?
Last time I checked he didn't have military experience.
Was it self-sabotage?
Paranoia of the officer core?
It seems like such retarded decision.
Insanity.

After the war turned against Germany, Hitler spent a lot of time complaining about how his generals had supposedly let him down. Appointing Himmler leader of AGV may have just been an attempt to see if maybe a die-hard Nazi's leadership could succeed where professional military skill had failed.

Surely he had more military experienced fanatics?

By that time, no.
due to the nature how high command worked Hitler was detached from reality ever since stalingrad
you see he has a couple of arselickers like Jodl and Keitel, who just nod and agree as Hitler makes plan with his divisions on the table, they dont tell him those divisions lack equipment or soldier, then they correspond with the Army Group, Army corps and whatever high command is involved in the operation, make a patchwerk plan that will surely never reach its goal but its gona be useful atleast
when these high command report back they failed, the fuhrer is furious, obviously (in his mind) he made sensible and reachable objectives, so the only reason of failure can be cowardice or treason
those advising him dont dare telling him the bad news that his precious totenkopf went into battle with 30 tanks and 500 soldats instead of 120 and 2500
at the end of the this chain of lies sits the political SS and Himmler who will without question will always reply Ja, mein Führer!, because by the time an Army Group is called Vistula, defeat was inevitable and he was thinking how could he become the head of a the new german state
Hitler was a psychotic dumb sperg.

because everyone had already abandoned him and he didn't think Himmler was going to stab him in the back like he did. (Himmler declared himself new ruler even before Hitler was dead and tried, rather naively to make peace with the allies9
