>the gods live atop Mount Olympus

Well, did any ancient Greeks ever climb up there? And what was the reaction when they saw nothing?
>>
Apparently they lived in the gorges of the mountain
>>
Why have I never thought about this?
>>
>>3274052
They did climb it, that's how we know the Gods actually existed.
>>

>be indian
>gods' live in the Himalayas
>climb up there
>find only dumb tibetan peasants
>convert to buddhism because 404 not found

they were happy they didn't end like pic related
>>
>>3274052
>easily climbable
It's actually pretty hard to climb.
>>
>>3274052
The ancient Greeks didn't believe in the Gods the same way we believe today.
Heck most of them knew it was all just a bunch mambo jumbo. Difference is their religion was very humane, provided educational and relateable stories about the human condition and was used as an excuse to build something beautiful and celebrate life.
>>
>And what was the reaction when they saw nothing?
They had faith in things unseen :)
>>
>>3274412
this is total bullshit. the entire reason that christians were sometimes persecuted for not participating in sacrifices was based on the logic that they could anger the gods and put the entire community in danger
>>
>>3274412
>Difference

Stop pretending like their pagan lifestyles were better than the monotheistic religions. Those too have contributed to life in the very same ways you have mentioned i.e. beautiful architecture, stories on the human condition, educational etc etc
>>
>>3274052
They just thought that nobody was home and that the gods had just stepped out to go to the store or something.
>>
>>3274423
Those were just the excuses, there were other reasons behind such cases

>>3274425
I never said it was better stop assuming things. I just said it was a different time and people though differently.
>>
>>3274412
BS they blamed the gods for Troy as much as we blame Bush for 9/11.
>>
>>3274450
>ancient people didn't mean what they said, even their explanations were metaphorical
>>
>>3274052
They didn't think they were on top of the mountain just like the chinese didnt think the universe was made of only ten thousand things.
The gods "lived" on top of Mount Olympus because it is the tallest thing in greece and the gods are ABOVE all.

Wait a second, you made this thread yesterday as well!
>>
Olympus did not just refer to one mountain and there is no reason to believe they meant the one we think of today when they talked about the one the gods lived on.

>>3274412
>The ancient Greeks didn't believe in the Gods the same way we believe today.
Yeah, they did. They consulted oracles and were in serious fear of divine wrath. Except for the philisophers, they even believed their idols were divine avatars. How seriously they took the myths varied, but that's a slightly seperate issue
>>
If you read any popular Greek philosophers like Plato, he up and says "we all know the stories of the poets are bullshit meant to teach you (usually bad) moral lessons, and the real gods are obviously not the ones depicted in the stories. The poets are storytellers and only imbeciles take their word as indisputable fact."

You can simultaneously believe Poseidon will ruin your shit on your next voyage if you don't appease him and not actually buy it that the gods all dwell on mount Olympus in a literal sense. It's not like the Greeks had a 'holy book' that was said to be indisputable, they just constructed stories and myths.
