Can somebody PLEASE give me a non meme answer rundown on this country? Is their language truly indistinguishable from Bulgarian? Or is there a real difference between Macedonian and Bulgarian? If they are just Bulgarians who fell under the dominion of Serbs/Yugoslavs why doesn't the Bulgarian part merge with Bulgaria and the Albanian part merge with Albania? Why does it even exist?
Is it possible to get a non /int/ meme explanation of this country?

It's not indistinguishable from Bulgarian. They're not Bulgarians. They're their own thing which is a mix of Serbian and Bulgarian culture and language though probably closer to Bulgarian than Serbian.
The problem is that they're not entirely sure what they are. The whole national identity thing is kind of new to them, and they're still trying to piece it together from history and culture and that identity crisis is what makes it easy for people to just dismiss them as uppity Bulgarians or something.
