Why did the Khwarazmians kill Genghis' ambassadors?

They believed them to be spies that foreshadowed an invasion. Which was probably correct since that was a pretty common mongol modus operandi.

They probably didn't, and it just made for a good moral story so it became the official reason why things happened. It's not as if the Mongols refused to invade anyone else because their ambassadors were treated well.
