Why didn't France care about its North American colony and left it alone against the english?
With control over the St. Lawrence River, the Great Lakes and access to the Gulf of Mexico this could only have enriched France, no?

Because there were about 3 or 4 French guys there and the economic importance of all that land was (at the time) less than that of that tiny island in the caribbean.
In the long run though it probably was the greatest strategic retardation France ever made.
