the only way meaningful independence would have been achieved was to unite south america, kind of like when the usa's independence idea was gaining steam a prominent idea was that united we stand, divided we fall.

Probably. Who wouldve thought, at the time, that the 13 colonies would've been able to maintain a centralized state? Some of the state's were not only radically different economically but also ethnically- with shitloads of germans, Dutch and not to mention in terms of class and culture. By comparison South America was much simpler- not too densely populated and dominated by large landowners through and through outside of Peru, potosi and the northern coast of Colombia.
