How was it pathetic? Plenty of military leaders killed themselves by throwing themselves into their own swords. Suicide is the means of taking personal responsibility for failure while not giving the enemy the triumph of defeating you in person.

This is true, but the fact that he didn't go out in a blaze of glory, or leading a final push, or something that fit the bill of what he instilled in millions of Germans to fight and die for their cause.
