One of the main reasons was that to the best of my knowledge, there was no draft for a major nation until the French Revolution. This allowed countries to send millions of people into battle. Also, population growth obviously.

This. Also you are comparing hundreds of years of difference. Medieval men had to supply their own arms, where in the 1900s the concept of a nation and standing armies had taken hold and it came to responsibility of each government to arm their soldiers
