How did Hitler keep the NSDAP rallies/meetings/speeches violence free post-beer hall putsch and his release from prison? What did he do exactly apart from orders from above?

they were violent though
Hell, even their propaganda films like "Hans Westmar" shows constant fighting at the marches

How did they manage to get a decent proportion of votes with continuing violence?

Same as the communist did. Threat the votes and silence your opponents, hence why said Hort Wessel or "Hans Westmar" got shot and killed because he was causing such a ruckus for the communist party.

They weren't the aggressors. In Germany, after WWI, numerous communist groups were trying to establish a communist government in their respective cities and regions. These groups continued to exist despite their failed attempts. The fascist movements across Europe were established in order to fight communists, because they deemed the democratic governments not willing or being able to combat the constant threat from the fair left.

Also this, starting small scale civil war really didn't look good on their part.

Exaclty the same as what many movements did, he essentially instilled a strong sense of almost military discipline among his members to look profesional, and to not go out looking for fights.
I definelty think that Hitlers time in prison after the failed beer hall putsch made him reavlaute the NSDAP's sense of direction, in regards to being a politcal party and not a revolutionary movement.
This was much to the disdain of indviduals such as Röhm and Strasser who were more for the idea of a working class revloution not a politcal movement, the night of the long knives speaks for itself as to how that turned out.
To conclude you could also say that this transformation was a way of appealing to bougeoir and christan voters who before never would have touched the NSDAP with a barge pole, however upon seeing them toned down many turned to Hitler espically post 1929 when it was lose everything including their head with the communists, or national socalism.
