Absolute shit load.
Notitia Dignitatum is the most famous source for the later Roman army, and is a unique document. It details command structures, ranks, shield designs for each unit, fort locations etc.

so would different shield designs for each unit have been the same for earlier Legions?
would a wall of mono designed shields be largely fiction? or would they each be unique to the legionary that wielded it?
This 3rd century example seems to have a design thats unique, perhaps painted by hand by the owner.

These weapons were churned out in state "factories" and so initially went unadorned. I believe that the uniform look is a myth, and different legions and cohorts had different designs on their shields for the sake of recognition and esprit de corps.

Why is there a hole in the middle? Was there some metal piece?

Would have a shield boss on the front for breaking noses and deflecting hits.
