While being on the offensive, the North was also lacking in leadership, when compared to the South, for a good first half of the war. Those two factors most likely led to such a number in casualties.

The Yankees benefitted more from the strengths of defensive positions throughout the war, they'd just get attacked and still take superior losses while clinging to a defensive position
