It was an entirely new vision in Japan whose regionalism was far more stark than France, Italy or Germany, State Shinto was implemented following the Meiji restoration to create a proper formal religion based around the monarch as the head (much like Anglicanism in Britain, but with the living descendant of Jesus in charge) and to kill foreign ideas, the entire bullshit bushido meme was invented around this point too as a way to enforce loyalty to the state
