They were the offspring of angels and human women. The angels came to Earth to get pucci and the woman gave birth, of course, to demigods - the Nephilim.

I wouldn't say they were more powerful than angels, but they were still more powerful than regular people. Think Hercules. He was a demigod and had godlike strength, but was still mostly human, not as powerful as the gods.

Of course, the deluge happened and the Nephilim died alongside most everyone else. And their angelic fathers dematerialized on Earth and couldn't return to Heaven.
