Yea except they aren't isolated incidents. The Japanese (and many other Asian cultures) have deep seated cultural taboos around discussing negative actions that occurred in the past. The vast majority of young people in Japan have no idea what happened at Nanking and legitimately believe that Japan was fighting a war of self defense against the US.
