His most famous words, but not his last. People often erroneously quote it as "at this dis-" for comedic effect. General Sedgwick was known among his men as a good and compassionate commander. It's sad that he's remembered today as a punch line. John Sedgwick's real last words, as recorded by General McMahon, were spoken to an enlisted soldier.
>"All right, my man; go to your place"
In the next moment, McMahon was toppled to the ground by his friend's falling, lifeless body, covered in his blood.

Tbh, he was actually much better than you think at warfare. Mexico was a blunder, but only because the American civil war ended sooner than he expected.

The thing about 1870 is that by that point he was no longer an absolute monarch, and had powers similar to a mere president. He tried to enlarge the size of the army to match prussia, but the legislature blocked it. Then he tried to introduce reforms, which the legislature again delayed until they ended up only beginning a few months before the war.

If he had retained absolute power, 1870 would have been at worst a white peace and at best a minor french victory, though I doubt in either case he could prevent germany being united in some form.

I get pissed that his reputation is ruined by the people who used his defeat to empower themselves

Dearest,

I feel certain I am going mad again. I feel we can't go through another of those terrible times. And I shan't recover this time. I begin to hear voices, and I can't concentrate. So I am doing what seems the best thing to do. You have given me the greatest possible happiness. You have been in every way all that anyone could be. I don't think two people could have been happier till this terrible disease came. I can't fight any longer. I know that I am spoiling your life, that without me you could work. And you will I know. You see I can't even write this properly. I can't read. What I want to say is I owe all the happiness of my life to you. You have been entirely patient with me and incredibly good. I want to say that - everybody knows it. If anybody could have saved me it would have been you. Everything has gone from me but the certainty of your goodness. I can't go on spoiling your life any longer.

I don't think two people could have been happier than we have been.

A famous legend has persisted from ancient times. As deacon in Rome, St Lawrence was responsible for the material goods of the Church and the distribution of alms to the poor.[8] St Ambrose of Milan relates that when the treasures of the Church were demanded of St Lawrence by the Prefect of Rome, he brought forward the poor, to whom he had distributed the treasure as alms.[9] "Behold in these poor persons the treasures which I promised to show you; to which I will add pearls and precious stones, those widows and consecrated virgins, which are the Church's crown."[5] The Prefect was so angry that he had a great gridiron prepared with hot coals beneath it, and had Lawrence placed on it, hence St Lawrence's association with the gridiron. After the martyr had suffered pain for a long time, the legend concludes, he cheerfully declared: "I'm well done. Turn me over!"[8][10] From this derives his patronage of cooks, chefs, and comedians.

In Tarot, "The Fool" is a card of the Major Arcana. The tarot depiction of the Fool includes a man (or less often, a woman) juggling unconcernedly or otherwise distracted, often with a dog or cat at his heels. The fool is in the act of unknowingly walking off the edge of a cliff, precipice or other high place. Another Tarot character is Death. In the Middle Ages, Death is often shown in Jester's garb because "The last laugh is reserved for death."

Johnny Ace, an R&B singer, died in 1954 while playing with a pistol during a break in his concert set. His last words were, “I’ll show you that it won’t shoot.”

"Thanks to all"
Vladimir Komarov, sarcastic and resigned last transmission before contact was lost with his Soyuz 1 capsule and it plummeted full speed into the earth. The sad part is he knew this was going to happen and volunteered to replace the Soviet hero Gagarin. The last words Gagarin spoke to him over the comms were "The last faze of the operation is almost done, keep calm, everything is going great."

Can't find anything to support that.
All I can find is that he showed fear when he heard another rebel, called Willy, being shot in the next room.

Well later testimonies expanded on that. The document is pretty basic. I think Che's final quote might be real but I've also heard that he showed a lot more fear than some people think. Not so brave when he was on the other end of the barrel. Also he died rather slowly due to being shot in the neck.
Maybe this guy revealed more.

Given that only a young soldier who killed him was present at the time we have no certainty that he really said it but it doesn't change much to me. Rodriguez did a fine job.

He certainly went on benders when he was bored, but he wasn't an alcoholic. He didn't loose teeth, he didn't hide his drinking, nor did he lose friends over the habit. He was just a lightweight (he was around 5'8" 140 lbs. during the war) and always drank whiskey, so he'd be off his ass after 4 shots.

He could always lead, but he was a quiet family man at heart and hated begin separated from his wife and children.

>Having broken an order from Francis I forbidding Triboulet from making jokes on the queen and courtesans, the king ordered that he should be put to death. Having served particularly well the king for many years, Francis I granted Triboulet the right to choose the way he would die.
>Triboulet, with his sharp mind, said the following: "Bon sire, par sainte Nitouche et saint Pansard, patrons de la folie, je demande à mourir de vieillesse." which translates to: "Sir, for Saint Nitouche's and Saint Pansard's sake, patrons of insanity, I choose to die from old age."
>Having no other choice than to laugh, the king ordered that Triboulet must not be executed, but rather instead be banished from the realm.

>Once, Triboulet could not contain himself and slapped the monarch on the bum. The monarch lost his temper and threatened to execute Triboulet. A little later, the monarch calmed down a little and promised to forgive Triboulet if he could think of an apology more insulting than the offending deed.

>A few seconds later, Triboulet responded: "I'm so sorry, your majesty, that I didn't recognize you! I mistook you for the Queen!"

Because you're used to viewing them as history. As a discipline, history is about taking the past (which is just one damn thing after another) and composing it into a valuable form. In doing so, it becomes a narrative, and the individual people within it become characters. It's impossible to create any sort of meaning out of past events without the creation of these narratives, because of how humans think, but it does mean that you need to work very hard to get a glimpse of someone in living colour before returning them to their place in history.

"I came alone and I go as a stranger. I do not know who I am, nor what I have been doing," the dying old man confessed to his son, Azam, in February 1707.
