how wrong is this statement?
If it wasn't for WW2, the USSR would have a lot less clay to work with, and communism as a consequence would have been much weaker, seeing a united anti-commie front.

Enormously wrong. You hadn't actually seen any expansion by the USSR from the time Stalin is in charge until you have the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact.
