Animals feel both those instincts and eat their offspring when starving, anon. The only thing that's different is human intelligence.
But it being taboo and horrible can also be counter acted by the very sensation of extreme hunger which the human mind isn't used to experiencing and can't fucking handle.

It's not to justify it but there's virtually no reason to see humans eating their offspring as different from bears unless the children are a certain age. Unless you can't wrap your head around the sensation of hunger and starvation and what it drives people to do.
