Historically speaking, why did people like Consumerism back in the 80's, but dislike consumerism now specifically?
Because everyone had shitloads of money in the 80s.

Income inequality wasn't as high as it is now, so the poor could still afford to at least pretend to be able to purchase a lot of the shit that consumerism encourages them to buy.

No one dislikes consumerism, only morons who like to complain, and they're usually the biggest consumers of all.

Objectively false statement, completed with you demonizing people while strawmanning them.

Find me one person who is against consumerism while not being a consumerist.
There are none.
It's the same as people complaining about everyone being on their phones while on a bus or train, as if its a bad thing, or as if people didn't read newspapers in the past.

this is the stupidest argument ever
its like someone in Stalin's Russia saying that everyone must be a socialist because everyone's stuff is made by the socialist system
or someone in the deep south saying that all the black people must support slavery because most of them are slaves
its a circular argument that makes no sense
also its possible to exist in a consumerist system and not rampantly consume to the detriment of the planet and your fellow humans, as you evidently do

I guess that a larger focus on environmental awareness and some people's efforts at showing "what's behind the product" played a part in it starting to get hated, but it doesn't explain everything.
Personally most complains about consumerism seemed to be coming from people envious of people that have the latest phone, or writers trying to push a pet issue with an unreadable book.
