Most of Europe was catholic during WW1, right? So why didn't the Pope just say that anybody who fought in the war would be excommunicated?
>>3204514
Cause they gave as much a shit about hjis opinion then as they do now.
That just leaves us with Britain and Russia to stop half of Germany.

Britain: Protestant
France: Atheist
Germany: Protestant
Austria-Hungary: Catholic
Russia: Orthodox
>>3204514
wrong
Honestly most people stopped obeying the Pope by the 13th century
>>3204514
The Pope made many attempts foster some sort of peace agreement, all of which were ignored. The real truth is that by 1915, so many lives had been sacrificed that the war was self-sustaining at that point. Both sides were desperate to secure an outcome which would sufficiently worthwhile as to justify the sacrifices which had already been made. Both sides wanted to not merely win, but to cripple the other side so severely that they would never again be able to pose any significant threat; Carthaginian peace, peace achieved by punishing the enemy so conclusively that they are never again in a position to conduct war against you.

lmao
>>3204514
1. Britain and Germany were Protestant
2. Nobody gave a fuck about the pope anymore
>>3204514
Because your anglo-proddie notion that the Pope is some kind if God Emperor is false.
>>3205167
It probably wouldn't have existed because the wars of religion and many other subsequent wars would have never happened to push france and 'germany' closer into animosity for control of the lowlands
>>3205167
The best armies of the war were Protestant, if Germany and England had united for another Reformation in 1914,the Vatican and all of it's idols would have been leveled.
>>3205167
Europe was carrying on fine killing each other even when both sides were Catholic.
>>3204514
>What is conscription
>>3204514
Pope was an opportunist sellout back then
>>3204514
He desperately tried and was instrumental in the Christmas Truce.
