Why didn't America ever nationalize its natural resources (coal, oil, copper, etc.) and transportation networks (railroads, airlines, streetcars) like most of Europe, Asia, and Latin America?
>>
>>3184247
Because it was domestically stable enough that it could ensure a constant supply of strategic resources and transportation without having to take over everything. Why burden yourself with the administration of all that shit if you don't have to?

(Also, a lot of railroads in the U.S. are owned by various levels of government, although more commonly state government than federal government. And they own pretty much all the roads)
>>
>>3184247

FDR is probably the closest thing that America has ever had to a real socialist president and even he would have been revolted by the idea of nationalizing industry. Regulating it, absolutely, but not taking direct control.
>>
ever since the get-go, there's been a strong aversion to putting too much power/control in the hands of the government, or at least one part of it
it's a big reason why the US has survived so long: a functional system of checks and balances/separation of power, even when opposing sides hate each other at abnormal levels

now you can argue that the American government is very powerful as is, and i think that's a fair statement, but the fact there's no national control of things like resources, infrastructure, or healthcare is telling of American political culture. people would cry tyranny at any such arrangement.
hell there's still friction between the federal/state levels, and 'muh states rights' was a driving factor behind the Civil War.

this is the same country whose first system, the Articles of Confederation, was such a decentralized mess they HAD to change it

there's also the factor of a strong tradition of private enterprise. unlike in Europe, where you have the legacy of an aristocracy who controlled all the land and wouldn't be caught dead engaging in business or commerce.
>>
>>3184292
>but the fact there's no national control of things like resources, infrastructure, or healthcare is telling of American political culture. people would cry tyranny at any such arrangement.

But they love it when it's a corporation monopolizing and dictating their health, energy, and infrastructure choices.
>>
The passenger rail system, Amtrak, is effectively nationalized.
>>
>>3184363
I know, it's an odd double-standard. Americans love their private enterprise
who knows, maybe we'll get something along the lines of trust-busting and anti-monopoly policies again

>mfw Teddy Roosevelt was an icon of the 'Progressive Era' in American politics
>>
Why would AMerica do it?
>>
>>3184247
because free market capitalism leads to better services.
>>
>>3184471
Prove it.
>>
>>3184471

Like education, health care, housing, water supply, and others public services ,right?

>it's a big reason why the US has survived so long:
stop this bullshit.
there's nothing exceptional about the longevity of the US. The ONLY reason we have "survived" is because we have a continent all to ourselves essentially, surrounded by two oceans.
>>
>>3184897
>There's no way to profit from providing people with a commodity they literally need to fuckig survive.

The fact the capitalist want to get profit for that, is the justification of class struggle, classcuck.
>>
>>3184247

Because they were tremendously abundant, and because America was starting from scratch and didn't have centuries of centralizing and protectionist guild nonsense to unravel.
>>
>>3184947
>muh class struggle

Why don't you struggle with learning how to tie your shoes first, kiddo.
>>
>>3184292
>it's a big reason why the US has survived so long

You barely even managed going 100 years before having a civil war which tore up the rule book and have failed more power to the central government famalam.

So have some items regulated and some not? Find that happy medium between min-anarchism and the abolition of all private production?

You are not a robot, anon. You can find your way between multiple conflicting ideologies.

These deaths are not caused by capitalism.

>>3187608

They all have socialized healthcare.

The Invisible Hand stops being efficient when the demand is utterly inflexible, such as in the case of healthcare. Providers can charge whatever the fuck they want because the alternative to paying up is death.

All the things with inflexible demand should be either socialized or heavily heavily regulated.
>>
>>3187656
A form of socialism*
>>
>>3187670
No, a form of capitalism. If private means of production exist, it's capitalism. There's a reason why Marx hated SocDems and viewed them as bourgeoise lite.

Invisible hand is complete bullshit, but so is communism.

Norway is the richest or second richest country in the world.

Look:

All their oil is nationalized too. I'm sick of economic illiterate retarded shouting "socialism! .....Venezuela!"

By the 1990s, Conrail was so successful under government management that its chief competitors in the region, CSX and Norfolk Southern, conspired to buy out the system and split it between them, thus achieving a duopoly over the Northeast.

Nonsense. The U.S government is one of the most powerful individually on Earth. It is the only government with the power to chase its own citizens across the planet and demand that they pay taxes whilst not living there.

Many of those industries were tied to American government in a pseudo-corporatist way. Lobbiest would essentially bride or create vested interest amongst politicians and the government would give capital to said companies. Many of these companies created near monopolies with the resources and leeway that government legislation would give them, and not their would be competitors. That being said, the United States was somewhat leary of nationalization and were quite successful without doing so.
>>3184269
Blatantly wrong. FDR's most famous policies were against his beliefs and judgments. He was a fiscal conservative who happened to try Keynes theory since conservative economic measure had proven useless.
