Why Germany used petrol engines instead of diesels in their WW2-era vechicles? Other warring nations did use diesels, most notably the Soviet Union.
Petrol was one of Germany's main economic bottlenecks. Germany had little access to crude oil and had to (inadequately) supplement its needs with expensive and labor-intensive synthetic petrol.
None of these problems would appear had Germany used diesels, since they can run even on vegetable oil which Germany could obtain in sufficient quantities.

Submarines and other marine craft took priority over tanks for deliveries of German Diesel engines.
Also, with 1940's technology, un-supercharged diesels have considerably lower power to weight than gasoline engines do. V-2 ad GAA have similar horsepower, but V-2 needed 39 liters of displacement while GAA only needed 18.

Another note is that only the Soviets used diesel engines en masse with the standardization of the V-2 series of engines.
The US primary engine was the gasoline R975 and GAA series.
The British used the gasoline Meteor on Cromwell, the gasoline bedford on the Churchill, and the gasoline liberty in their early war tanks.
