They faked out the British and French, coaxing their best soldiers north to oppose what they thought would be the full might of the German military. What they were met with was a smaller, decoy brigade while the tanks and great majority of soldiers broke through to the south. From there, the Germans formed a chain to the Channel and surrounded the British and French. They were pushed further back and further back, until Hitler decided to stall. This lead to the Miracle of Dunkirk, of which there is a new movie out that I have yet to see, and even more, a giant missed opportunity for the Germans. By stalling, Hitler allowed for the British troops and technology to escape and recuperate, instead of delivering a knock out blow when they could. Now why would Hitler do this?
1. He was still calling for "peace" with the British, and didn't want to deliver a humiliating blow. For some reason, he still thought "peace" under his terms would happen.
2. I'm not even shitting you, Göering wanted the pleasure of his Luftwaffe delivering the final blow, which took a few days to prepare for and completely failed.
They eventually choked them out, and from there marched to Paris easily due to controlling the north (disallowing Britain to make a meaningful landing) and decimating French troops in the trap.

I assume they probably stripped the Maginot Line of all it's weapons and supplies for use elsewhere, and without extending it to cover Belgium (which the Allies would obviously go through) it was probably a bad idea to keep men there just to get encircled.

They had the Siegfried Line which worked well enough until the Germans blew all their reserves on the Battle of the Bulge. To their credit, they would have won Battle of the Bulge had they not ran out of gas.

Furthermore, if the Germans did extend the maginot line across the entire border, it would have required time and resources that they probably didn't have considering how fast the Americans were pushing and how hard the Eastern front was. I guess they could have started building it before D-Day happened, but what's the point of building a wall in the middle of your own empire if you haven't lost France yet? Those resources were better spent protecting the coast, a pity it went so bad for them.

They didnt finish it because they didnt want to antagonise Belgium, which was stupid. The whole plan was for the French army to defeat the Germans in Belgium so they wanted to keep them on their side, and BUILD WALL was not going to do that.
It would have been better if Belgium had built a proper defence line along their canals which would have been impossible to get through.
