They were enslaved by Muslims not Christians. A good chunk of them were Muslims originally or at least affiliated with Islam through exposure. The rest were animist. Like KeK worship.

>didn't they have their own religion?
A lot of the African diaspora of religions have their roots in Yoruba, so not every slave allowed themselves to get completely cucked out of their original religion. In some cases it just evolved.
>were they forbidden to profess it?
In every instance that I can think of, yes.

Islam was a faith of trade and education, the Fulani Jihads came later and were the result of pre-arab racial supremacy.

Ferenji should learn before speaking on Africa.

Christianity or rather imagery and loose ideas of Christianity were already forming amongst Africans before wholesale enslavement into the new world.

But also in the US, traditional faiths were stamped out, you still had small things in places like the Low country and Louisiana but mostly because of the policies and ideals of slaving using Christianity to make their captive docile and "saved" along with a much, much higher native born rate Christianity took hold.

Basically they were, at first, forced to. They'd get Sundays off (if lucky) for church services. However, like in most cases of forced conversion, they kept elements of their first religion, but wrapped it up in Chtistian symbology to keep massa of the scent.

Anyway, although the cultural elements were different, most could get their heads around the sky daddy concept, and the bible includes plenty of yearning slave narratives to draw from.

Some from West Africa were Muslims, but it tended to be more the upper class (nobles, aspiring bourgeoisie) who were. If they were unfirtunate enough to find themselves captured... Even so, Islam was fairly new for the region, so it did not have deep roots.

Take your stupid fucking frog back to redd it or /pol/, I don't care pick one
>>

They were enslaved by Jews, Muslims, other Africans, Calvinists, Anglicans, Catholics and a bunch of other atheistic and deistic merchant-types.
So
>why did they praise the same god of those who enslave them?
is a nonsensical question.
>>

Islam has been in west Africa since the 10th century.
>>
>>3168008
Because Christianity is the one true religion.
>>
>>3168119
As said, it was still a fairly new religion, with "status". Poorfags in vulnerable circumstances were more likely to be targeted in slave raids, not "urban" upper classes. In some cases, it was the local Muslims doing the selling. Obviously, some Muslims did get enslaved. But the stronger substrate in Black American Christianity is by far African folk religions. In the Caribbean and Brazil you see this far stronger.

>and the bible includes plenty of yearning slave narratives to draw from.
This.
Christianity has always found root among the poor and outcast.
>>
>>3168008
Many west Africans were monotheistic animists already if not mudslime. So the concept of Christianity wasn't too hard to grasp.
>>
>>3168161
Nearly a third of the Africans brought to America were Muslims. Islam was a substantial influence. Many were POWs from the Fulani jihads.
>>
>>3168202
true and some were familiar with blood sacrifice so the symbolic drinking of blood and eating the body of christ was not foreign

During that one particular period and region, sure. Slavery occurred over many centuries and places, m8. Regardless, we're talking mostly the lay people, dirt farmers and peasants.
