Because Irish society was based all around cattle raids. Irish were a warriors race in that they were constantly fighting with their neighbours to gain honour and cattle. The more cattle you had the richer you were.
Really most of the time when Irish were beaten was due to them stabbing each other in the back because of family feuds.

It does literally come down to cattle.

The fact that as a result of this a person's wealth was highly mobile was one of the main factors as to why Ireland didn't have "castles" as we know them.

With life based around not really grounding oneself in an area, and a lack of any real outside influence, it's not a surprise at all that Ireland was essentially a nest of infighting.

They weren't connected to a landmass of different people and thus for a long time there was never a sense of common people uniting-it was cutthroat as fuck.

Closest it came was under Brian Boruma or Máel Sechnaill Mac Domnaill (the latter of whom is infinitely cooler despite all the praise Brian gets)
