>In 1935 Martin King Sr. changed his name to Martin Luther King Sr after a religious pilgrimage to Germany
How did he do this? Did the Nazis let some random black guy waltz into their country?

Yeah contrary to belief. Nazis didn't really hate black people.
Most visiting African Americans were treated better in Germany than back in the United States.

Can confirm. My great uncle visited in the 30's, Germans were polite and friendly unlike Americans.

Going on vacation a foreign country is a lot easier than applying for permanent resident. The Nazis probably would have taken notice if he'd decided to stay, but harassing a foreign citizen just for visiting for a short period and then leaving would be extremely petty, even for them. If he'd applied for permanent residence, it probably would have been denied.
I too am surprised the Land of the Free would have let a negro on an airplane back then.

The Nazis sterilized the "Rhineland bastards" for the fact that they were half Black. Their propaganda displayed colonial African troops as monkey-like, in contrast to the white POWs. Hitler thought America was going to shit partly due to "Negroid miscegenation".
