Has there ever been a successful vigilante group in history that atleast made a difference before inevitably getting publicly executed or dying out in obscurity?

Well depends on your standards for "succesful" and "vigilante". There were plenty of vigilante groups that got absorbed into government for example.

Private citizens were pretty much required to keep law and order during the Medieval period in England. I'm not sure whether you could call them vigilantes since the law literally placed the onus on private citizens to enforce law and order.
Proper police forces are actually something of modern invention.

Law and order as we know it is a relatively recent concept.
For much of human history, the local community would have been responsible for dishing out (often summary) justice.

Obviously the Pinkertons.
Maybe the Taliban?
>In 1991, the Taliban (a movement originating from Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-run religious schools for Afghan refugees in Pakistan) also developed in Afghanistan as a politico-religious force. The most often-repeated story and the Taliban's own story of how Mullah Omar first mobilized his followers is that in the spring of 1994, neighbors in Singesar told him that the local governor had abducted two teenage girls, shaved their heads, and taken them to a camp where they were raped. 30 Taliban (with only 16 rifles) freed the girls, and hanged the governor from the barrel of a tank. Later that year, two militia commanders killed civilians while fighting for the right to sodomize a young boy. The Taliban freed him.
That's pretty vigilante behaviour, and then 1996-2001 they where the recognized government of Afghanistan.

This goes a long way in explaining how groups like the Taliban and ISIS gain power.
>land is a shithole
>Mad Max tier societal decay, murder and rapings in the street unopposed
>a person or group of persons say enough with this shit and extra-judicially start reigning in the bullshit.
>group finds favor with the locals and turns into a movement
>movement snowballs into an ideology
>ideology snowballs into being a way of life
And so now what was a localized group of people with good intentions is now an actual institution.
And then someone who's really charismatic and wants to run shit realizes that they can use the institution to gain power and voila
