How did members of the IRA such as Bobby Sands or the other Hunger Strikers-as well as various other members of the emergent Republican community-justify the actions of the IRA?
It's extremely easy to justify the will to fight against the loyalist government-the British Army/RUC/Prison Guards can all be fairly easily justified against but the civilians?
How did the prisoners claim to be the victims while serving a cause that harmed so many innocents?

not an expert, but I think since the moment the UK govt negotiates with the IRA it´s implicitly recognizing it as a belligerant force
