The barbarians didn't destroy that many buildings, the byzantines sieges and the eartquake of the IX century did way heavier damage and the renaisence then sistematically destroyed the roman forum and all the temples to build fancier homes for the popes and the aristocrats
check any building of ancient rome and you'll see
